Piano Man was sick the day his class went on a field trip to Rota Children’s Museum in the old city. We promised to take him one Saturday morning because it is only open to the public on Wednesdays from 4-6 pm, and Saturdays from 10 am -1 pm. Most days, it is filled with school groups and group tours.
It was a bit of challenge to find this building in the old city since the streets are very narrow and street signs are even smaller than a piece of paper, but Prof is a master at driving and directions.
Inside Rota’s Children’s Museum
We walked into the restored historic building with a renovated wooden staircase and clean white walls filled with art and other exhibits. Everything was in Greek, which was a shock to Piano Man.
However, the owner of the museum explained everything in English, and we learned about emotions and how to tell a story based on one’s emotions. Piano Man’s favorite time was making stories from the wooden plaques of pictures used to make up a story.
Linus enjoyed the different musical instruments and the big red punching bag with gloves. I guess if you feel the emotion of anger, you can go and punch this bag.
In Cyprus, there aren’t too many places for kids to go and learn outside of the classroom. We definitely miss our library back home, Barnes and Noble, and other free kid events in the U.S., but we find that places like Rota’s Children’s Museum is a nice addition to Cyprus’ cultural life.
