I had the opportunity to attend a preview of the reopening of the Museum of Modern Art in New York City back in October 2019. I had visited once before in 2000, but I was a young recent college graduate and had little money.
If you visited MoMA before the expansion, you’d know that it wouldn’t be a short visit. I remember taking long walks with my friend and feeling exhausted after one visit. Now with the new space, you could spend an entire day and still feel like you didn’t see everything.
TRAVEL TIP/GUIDE: MoMA has a pdf floor guide of the museum. Check it out! If the link breaks, here is a hardcopy of the floor plan map to plan your walk:
In fact, I had come with a plan to see only photography-related works. When I asked the staff where the photography collection was located, she said that the collection was scattered throughout the museum. The collection was organized by era or timeframe, which explains why I would need to walk a lot.
TRAVEL TIP: If you don’t have a full day to visit MoMA, then plan on which are the must-see art collections and head there. Otherwise, you can take a more relaxed approach and see where your feet lead you.
The day of my visit, I was enamored with the art installations that were scattered throughout. This one caught my attention:
The way the music played and the pendulum swung, I was impressed with the amount of time the artist took to create the piece.
I even ran across an older painting from my visit back in 2000.
Umberto Boccioni’s Dynamism of a Soccer Player. I don’t know why I liked it so much when I was younger, but I felt compelled to buy a poster of it and take it all the way back home.
