I made a last minute decision to go for a walk last Thursday. I strapped Linus to my back and trekked up to the old city.
It started out as a usual walk, until I heard sirens from fire trucks. I noticed cars honking more intensely during mid-morning traffic. It wasn’t until I started taking pictures that I noticed the traffic lights were out at a major intersection.
I kept going north, and I saw another set of traffic lights out. I thought, “Well, that’s weird. Why is this city block without power?”
Then I noticed more people standing outside of their small business shops. But that wasn’t the unusual part. There were also men and women in business attire standing outside of buildings as well. It looked like people were standing outside waiting for something.
I shopped at the local grocery store before heading home, and they had power.
But it wasn’t until I got back to the apartment and saw the elevator in our building was out that I realized the power outage was much larger than a city block.
We were without power for a part of the day. No electricity, no internet, and no cell phone usage. We eventually got power back, but there was no specific reason as to what caused the power outage. (Source: http://www.ekathimerini.com/4dcgi/_w_articles_wsite2_1_08/11/2012_469170)
As you can see from the pictures, people didn’t wait to let one car pass before they passed. I can’t imagine what it would have looked like back in 2011 when the majority of the island was without power.
