When Piano Man was Linus’ age, I used to take him to story time at our local library and Barnes and Noble. It was a favorite past time for us because it got us out of the apartment. And meeting those wonderful women, Ms. C, Ms. J, and Ms. S, who week-in and week-out read stories that encouraged each child to imagine and learn something new made reading fun.
Coming to Cyprus, I figured we were going to be hard pressed to find a library with books in English, but to find out that they didn’t have much in the way of public libraries at all was a bit disconcerting.
Luckily, Piano Man’s school allows parents to check out additional books as often as desired, and that has been so helpful for our boys who make it a point to read a couple of stories before going to bed.
However, if you don’t want to spend a ton of money on children’s books, St. Paul’s Anglican Church has second hand sales every Saturday from 10:00 am to 12:00 noon. For €2, a volunteer hands you a bag, and you can fill the entire bag with children’s books. It was a treasure trove for us since Piano Man loves to read.
We only brought a handful of children’s books from home to Cyprus, so the second hand sale was a blessing for us.
Additional Note: A friend mentioned that there are bookstores that have story time. However, the stories and crafts are given in Greek. If you or your children are wanting to learn Greek, this would be a wonderful way to learn the language.
