One thing we’ve learned when it comes to living on an island is to have a more laid back approach to day trips and outings. We used to love to go on a whim to the beach in Cyprus. After all, can you think of a better way to spend a day on an island other than hanging out at the beach?
Well, we may not be living on an island anymore, but we still enjoy making a day trip to some local water fun at Lake Michigan. And we did it pretty much on a whim while planning the night before with some friends.
I wasn’t sure if we’d make it out since it had been raining almost everyday leading up to the weekend of Labor Day, but Linus had been asking all week to go and Piano Man would never turn down an opportunity to play in the water.
So off we went to Grand Haven Beach. We know how busy it can get on holiday weekends at the beaches in the Midwest, but at least if you go before 10 am, you’ll have a better chance of parking than say around lunch time.
The weather looked a little gray and bleak at times, but again, it didn’t matter to the kids.

If you look at the following three photos below, you’ll see a progression of beach goers attendance growing as the day went on. By the time we left, it was packed.
I don’t think I’ll ever be able to say that Lake Michigan compares to the ravishing beautiful waters in the Mediterranean. But according to a 2013 CNN report, “20 More Can’t-Miss U.S. Beaches,” Grand Haven Beach is ranked 14th. It might have something to do with the beach having some waves compared to some of the calmer Lake Michigan waters at other nearby beaches, or it could be that fresh water is just a bit more enjoyable to wade in than salt water for some folks. However, I still think nothing will ever compare to a private beach experience we had with friends on the northern occupied territory in Cyprus in June.

For this planner who likes to plan ahead for every little detail, planning this beach outing was as simple and relaxing as the outing itself. What did you do on your Labor Day weekend?
