Cyprus’ Love for Korean Pop Music (K-Pop) and Psy

by Traveling Seouls

I vaguely remember the day when people started to post video links of Psy’s famous song, “Gangnam Style,” that went viral in 2012. I rolled my eyes, and said big deal. I know. I know. What kind of Korean am I? Don’t get my wrong. I listened to Korean pop music when I was a student in college. You may know some of the groups – DJ Doc, Seo Taiji, H.O.T., etc. I couldn’t really tell what they were saying, but the mixing of sounds, lyrics, and beats were really catchy.

Who knew that many young people in Cyprus loves Psy? We would hear “Gangnam Style” at the restaurants, Play4Kidz, and on television. His song is still played in Cyprus, and kids would stop what they are doing and dance his famous moves right on the spot as if they were in a flash mob production.

Psy’s American Music Awards performance with MC Hammer was pretty sweet. That became a turning point for me when they did a nice mash-up of the two artists’ songs and dance. Now, his second song, “Gentleman” apparently is rising the  Billboard’s hot 100 chart as well.

Psy, if you ever feel like making a world tour, you should come to Cyprus. They would love you.
