A Visit to Troodos Square

by Traveling Seouls

A couple of Sundays ago, we attended a church picnic up in the Troodos mountains after service. The weather in the city was really starting to heat up. In some parts of the U.S., the temperature in Cyprus would be considered summer – people wearing tank tops, shorts, and flip flops. But up in the mountains, it was still cool and breezy, perfect for a picnic in the mountains.

We had been to the Troodos before; however, we usually stayed near the base of the mountains.  Weaving around long twisty curves along the mountain side reminded me of that scene in the first Cars movie when Lightning McQueen and Sally drove along a mountain side to see the beauty of open road.

Troodos Square is a touristy spot and is also nearby a small church, St. George-in-the-Forest Church, which just opened up for the summer. The square had a few small restaurants and the Troodos Hotel across from the lovely shaded playground.

The kids thoroughly enjoyed the mountain breeze and free green space. We watched Greek-Cypriot families bring their dogs to the park to enjoy some fun in the beautiful warm sun.

We participated in a nice slow horse ride around the mountain base (10 minutes for €6). Piano Man experienced his first camel ride, and now his first horse ride. What a whirlwind experience for this kid.

We stopped by tourist gift shops, and we bought some sweetly flavored cashew nuts, and dried mangoes. If you think of dried mangoes at Costco that come in a huge 2 lb. packages, then these dried mangoes might taste a little different to you, as they are not sugar coated, but straight up dried mangoes. It was refreshing to not eat something overly crystalized with sugar.

Even though we were in cooler temperatures in the Troodos, the weather was still very pretty warm, and the kids’ faces were turning beet red. It was time for another ice cream treat to cool their bodies from all that outdoor play.

Troodos Square was a nice and quiet spot, not filled with too many tourists or visitors – just the perfect amount of sun, food, company, and fun.
